Regardless of a participant’s level of mobility, power chair bowling can be a fun and rewarding sport thanks to special apparatus that enables true participation and competition. 
 

In fact, power chair bowling has become so popular it’s been made an official event at the Wheelchair Games where professional athletes confined to wheelchairs compete for medals. 
 

There are an array of wheelchair bowling organizations throughout the United States organizing leagues and tournaments in a way that gets everyone involved and competing on some level -regardless of the disability that confines a person to a power wheel chair.  And if you think that a team of people bowling in their power wheel chairs makes it something other than true bowling, think again.

... have been sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) for official league play. And by ‘league play’, the USBC means any league, anywhere in the United States. So now, bowlers confined to power wheel chairs can experience the thrill of competition with able-bodied and other power wheel chair users. Even those who are paralyzed from the neck down can now participate in the sanctioned sport of bowling. 
 

The process and motions used in power chair bowling mimic those of able-bodied bowlers in every way: setup, approach and release of the ball as the bowler reaches, and stops at, the foul line. The combination of these motions is referred to as dynamic bowling, and has actually resulted in scores as high as 243 by a Colorado quadriplegic by the name of Jon Musgrave. 
 

In many cases, adaptive equipment for wheelchair bowling is considered to be therapeutic medical equipment. Because of this, financial assistance is often available to help those who might otherwise be unable to participate.

Adaptive apparatus, can easy be attached to a wheel chair for bowling, and as long as a user can safely drive their chair, they can use this type of apparatus to bowl. Most of these devices are designed as ramps that attach to the user’s chair. The user drives a short distance to build momentum and stops at the foul line to release the ball. Ramp systems can typically be attached to various wheel chair types, including all terrain power wheel chairs and heavy-duty power wheel chairs. 
 

With a little determination and the right adaptive apparatus, anyone who uses a power wheel chair can experience the fun and excitement of power chair bowling.
